Restoring the hay barn

Restoring the hay barn

When we bought the estate the barn had no roof, a fig tree growing through the floor and a family of owls in the loft. We kept the owls.

Every brick, numbered

The brick lattice on the south wall was the hardest part. Every brick was taken out, numbered and put back in the same place, with glass fixed behind it.

The living room today, under the old chestnut beams.

We wanted it to look as if nobody had touched it, which took three years of touching it.

The barn opened as a games room and summer kitchen in the spring of 2025. The fig tree is now in the garden, and still gives fruit in August.
